It’s deeper than I thought.
A senior leader said this to me recently after my Lead With Your Voice keynote:
“It’s not just communication. It’s how we connect as humans. How we advocate for ourselves and how we show up for one another.”
That perfectly captures the “why” behind what I teach.
It’s never just about what you do with your hands, or how polished your message sounds, or whether you hit all your talking points.
It’s about authenticity, clarity, and courage.
Ultimately, that is what builds connection which builds trust.
As I was reflecting on the leader’s words, I found myself coming back to my own evolution over the past 23 years, advising clients on their communication skills.
Communication is not superficial.
It’s profound. It’s deeply personal—even for leaders in the largest of companies—because we’re humans who come together based on a shared sense of purpose.
Communication is profound and deeply personal, because we’re humans who come together based on a shared sense of purpose
Start with mindset.
So many leaders start by searching for the right words. But effective communication doesn’t begin with external language, it starts from within.
In this short video, I share how mindset drives strategy, and why leading others starts with how you lead yourself.
The leadership lens.
At that recent keynote for a large healthcare organization, I spoke about how communication isn’t just a professional skill, it’s a deeply human one.
It’s what helps us build trust with our teams, align around purpose, and lead through complexity.
And sometimes, the most powerful words we can say as leaders are:
“I don’t know.”
“Here’s what we’re doing to find out.
“Here’s why it matters.”
That’s not superficial. That’s transformational.
And when they do that, something shifts. They don’t just become more effective communicators: they become more courageous leaders.
