How Senior Leaders Can Use Storytelling to Lead with Impact

Senior leaders don’t just share strategies—they inspire through stories. Learn how to use storytelling to align teams, build trust, and communicate your vision with authenticity and impact.

You’ve set the vision. You’ve built the strategy. Now it’s time to communicate across functions, regions, and layers of leadership.

But here’s the catch: the higher you move in the organization, the less you’re speaking for yourself, and the more you’re empowering others to carry your message forward.

And that’s where storytelling comes in.

Storytelling Isn’t Fluff. It’s a Leadership Strategy.

As a leadership communication advisor, I’ve coached senior executives across industries, from global financial firms to tech startups, on how to use storytelling to align teams and lead through change.

I’m not talking about TED-style memoirs. I’m talking about short, personal stories that:

  • Ground the message in real experience
  • Build trust with internal and external audiences
  • Help others connect emotionally to your why

The right story becomes a bridge between data and decision

Watch: How to Humanize Your Message as a Leader

YouTube video

In this short video, I explain why storytelling is essential for leaders, and how the best messages come not from scripts, but from real experiences.

You’ll learn:

• Why tight talking points can weaken your message
• How to empower your team to communicate your vision effectively
• When vulnerability helps (and when it doesn’t)

The Scar vs. Wound Rule

So how do you know if a story is ready to be shared?

Here’s the filter I always use (which I learned from The Moth’s Artistic Director, Catherine Burns):

“Stories should come from scars, not wounds.”

If you’re still processing the story emotionally, you’re not ready to share it publicly. A story that’s too raw makes you—and the audience—uncomfortable. It shifts the focus away from your message and onto your emotions.

But when it’s a scar—when you’ve had time to reflect and extract the lesson—that’s when a story can serve the audience.

How to Find the Right Story

You don’t need a dramatic origin tale. Some of the most effective leadership stories are moments of learning, doubt, or decision. Try asking:

  • Why me? Why do I care about this work or message?
  • What happened in my career that taught me this?
  • What’s a moment that shows, not just tells, what I believe?

When you start there, the story you tell will be one only you can share.

And that’s what moves people.

I love helping leaders find and tell their stories. Let’s connect and see how I can help you and your team bring out powerful stories to help you build trust and create momentum.

Leading Through Story

When your story is grounded in purpose, delivered with clarity, and rooted in authenticity, it doesn’t just make you a better speaker, it makes you a stronger, more trusted leader.
